A man has been charged over the sexual assault of a woman in Newcastle, NSW Police say.
About 3.20am yesterday (Sunday 19 November 2017), a 19-year-old woman was in a laneway off Cleary Street, Hamilton, when she was approached from behind by a man not known to her and allegedly sexually assaulted.
The woman struggled before leaving the laneway and notifying friends of the incident.
Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command commenced inquiries.
About 3.30pm yesterday, detectives attended a home in Alexander Street, Wallsend, and arrested a 45-year-old man.
He was charged with sexual intercourse without consent and refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Monday 20 November 2017).
