Sexual Crimes Squad charge man after Fitzroy sexual assault

A man has been charged by Sexual Crimes Squad detectives after a woman was sexually assaulted in Fitzroy on Friday.

The 50-year-old man has today been charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault after his arrest last night.

Police will allege a 20-year-old woman got into what she believed was a ride-share vehicle, near the intersection of Peel and Oxfords streets, on 30 April about 2.25am.

The driver is alleged to have offered the woman a free lift home after she left a licensed premise on Smith Street.

The driver drove the woman to a location on Rowe Street before allegedly sexually assaulting her inside the vehicle.

The victim managed to alert a friend via text message and police attended shortly after.

The Mill Park man will appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court this afternoon.
