Shape Kingston's First Art & Heritage Policy

We are developing a Visual Art and Heritage Collections Policy for the first time, and we are wanting to take the community on the journey with us.

Acknowledging and respecting our history is a vital part of building a strong community and shaping our shared future. Kingston's collections – from visual artworks to heritage items and monuments - help tell the story of who we are, where we've come from, and the values we hold for future generations.

Mayor Georgina Oxley said the policy is an important step in ensuring Kingston's collections are managed responsibly and remain meaningful to the community.

"Our heritage and artworks reflect Kingston's evolving identity," Cr Oxley said.

"This new policy will guide how we acquire, care for and make our collections accessible, while also considering how we respectfully retire items when appropriate.

"We want to make sure we get this right, and the best way to do that is by hearing from our community."

Kingston manages several significant collections including:

  • Heritage Collection
  • Visual Art Collection
  • Monuments and Memorials

The draft policy outlines procedures for acquisition and care, ensures public access is a key focus, and provides a process for deaccessioning items.

"This is the first time we've had a dedicated policy for our collections, and it's about making sure they are preserved, shared and celebrated for generations to come," Cr Oxley said.

"I encourage everyone in our community to take a look at the draft and let us know your thoughts."

The draft Visual Art and Heritage Collections Policy 2025 is out for public consultation until Sunday 28 September.
