Shellharbour City Council has awarded the new waste collection services contract to Remondis Australia Pty Ltd, following a joint tender process with Wollongong City Council.
The new contract will start 1 July 2027 and run for seven years, with options for up to three extra one-year extensions. This long-term arrangement will deliver cost-effective and reliable services, ensuring stability and continuity for our community.

Mayor Chris Homer said residents can be assured that their current waste services will remain the same.
"This contract maintains the services our community is used to, while setting us up for improvements that support a cleaner, more sustainable Shellharbour," Mayor Homer said.
"Residents will continue to receive the same reliable collections, with the added benefit of the most modern vehicles and systems available at this time. It also supports local jobs and keeps skills and investment here in the Illawarra" Mayor Homer said.
Under the new contract, Council will continue to provide the current services to residents that align with key objectives of Council's Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2024-2034, to reduce waste to landfill, cut carbon emissions and reuse materials instead of throwing them away. Council's bin collection service encourages residents to use their FOGO and recycling bins correctly, helping divert organics and recyclables from landfill. This supports Council's goal of achieving an 80 per cent resource recovery rate by 2030 and contributes to net zero emissions by 2050.
Council's 2024-2025 Annual Report highlighted recycling and FOGO contamination rates have decreased, contributing to an average of 55 per cent of waste being diverted from landfill.
Residents will also see improvements introduced under the new contract including:
- Modern collection fleet, featuring hybrid and hydrogen-powered trucks
- Enhanced online services, making it easier to book bulky waste collections and access information
- Upgraded technology to improve efficiency
By working with Wollongong City Council and using a local provider, Council is helping to keep jobs in the Illawarra and strengthen regional collaboration.
