Shire Hosts Important Water Discussions

Campaspe Shire Council is hosting two significant discussions this week focusing on the importance of water to our region.

This evening, Councillors and senior staff will attend a briefing from Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) to discuss the basin plan review process. Council is preparing a submission for this review, and these conversations will help guide that submission. The MDBA is in Echuca today and tomorrow meeting with key stakeholder groups.

Campaspe Shire Mayor Cr Daniel Mackrell said this was an important opportunity for Councillors to discuss MDBA matters, seek clarity on the engagement process and outline Campaspe Shire's key priorities relating to the Murray-Darling Basin and our community.

On Thursday morning, Council will be hosting a visit from the Federal Minister for the Environment and Water, Senator the Hon Murray Watt, to discuss a range of water policy matters. This forum will include representatives from agriculture peak bodies and local government representatives including Campaspe Shire Council, Murray River Group of Councils and Rural Councils Victoria.

Cr Mackrell said it was encouraging to see both the Minister and the MDBA visiting our region.

"We all know how important water is to our local farmers, manufacturers and broader community, and these visits give us an opportunity to discuss our concerns and priorities face-to-face with the key decision-makers.

"On behalf of our Campaspe community, I want to thank Senator Watt and the MDBA for visiting Campaspe Shire."

Submissions for the Murray-Darling Basin Plan Review are open until 1 May 2026, and Campaspe Shire Council encourages everyone with an interest in the future of the basin to have their say by making a submission through the MDBA website at https://getinvolved.mdba.gov.au
