One adult and three youths have been charged with stealing from multiple stores in the Launceston central business district after an incident in the city this afternoon, Tasmania Police say.

Shortly before 3pm Police were called by staff from one business who reported a group had been seen stealing items from their store and had left on foot.

Shortly after police located the group who had large quantities of stolen property from a number of businesses in their possession. The group were arrested for stealing and abusive language toward police offences.

A 18 year-old woman was charged and bailed to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court at a later date, while three female youths were also charged and will be proceeded against under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

Police have identified the owners of the majority of the recovered property. However, they would ask any businesses that may have had any stealing incidents during the afternoon of Tuesday, December 12, 2017 which have not yet been reported to contact Launceston police on 6777 3945.

Police would like to thank store owners for their assistance today, and would also like to take the opportunity to remind business owners to be vigilant within their stores especially during the busy Christmas shopping season.
