Showers and possible severe thunderstorms across eastern and northern Queensland

Isolated severe thunderstorms affected parts of south-east Queensland on Sunday afternoon, with showers and thunderstorms moving across northern and eastern Queensland over the next few days.

Severe thunderstorms are possible across northern, eastern and central Queensland.

Today and Tuesday will see a chance of severe thunderstorms across parts of the metro areas of south-east Queensland. Primary hazards are expected to be locally heavy rainfall, large hail and damaging winds.

On Wednesday, a potential low will form near the central east coast bringing the risk of widespread rain, thunderstorms in the eastern half of the state.

This will increase the risk of heavy to locally intense rainfall particularly in central Queensland.

Riverine flooding is possible, and a Flood Watch may be issued later today.

Damaging wind gusts and offshore gales over the southern coast are possible on Thursday and Friday dependent on the low's movement off the east coast.

In the Far North a trough is likely to form and induce monsoon like conditions across parts of the northern tropics through the latter part of this week.

A tropical low may form as a result in the Gulf of Carpentaria on Wednesday which is likely to increase rainfall across the Peninsula and may generate abnormally high tides along the western Peninsula coast and eastern Torres Strait Islands.

Over the weekend the low has the potential to move across into the northern Coral Sea and could increase rainfall and winds around parts of the north-east.
