Significant number of Code of Conduct investigations focused on Ashley

Tasmanian Labor

More than half of the total number of official State Service Code of Conduct investigations currently underway in the Communities Department relate to the Ashley Youth Detention Centre.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said it was extremely concerning that six of the 11 investigations currently underway across the department related to allegations raised about the juvenile detention facility.

The figure was revealed late today at Budget Estimates hearings.

"It's a frankly astounding admission on the part of Minister Sarah Courtney and it's a clear indication that there is something deeply wrong at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre," Ms White said.

"It's already been revealed over the past two days that an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment at the centre took almost two years to reach a conclusion and the findings were broadcast from the Estimates hearings before the complainant was informed.

"The number of complaints and investigations revealed today in the wake of that matter should be ringing serious alarm bells for Ms Courtney and the Liberal Government.

"Ms Courtney has gone to considerable lengths this afternoon to claim that the government places importance on creating safe and respectful workplaces.

"This would indicate the situation at Ashley is anything but."
