A single set of policies to inform the entirety of Tasmania's planning system is on the way with the release of the inaugural Tasmanian Planning Policies (TPPs).
Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent, said the policies were set to come into effect from 1 July 2026.
"These TPPs provide the first comprehensive policy guidance for Tasmania's planning system," Minister Vincent said.
"The TPPs have been developed in response to a long-standing call from local government, industry, business and the planning profession, and will enable the right development in the right places.
"It provides a level playing field and ensures everyone in the planning process works toward a common goal."
Future growth, protection of environmental and heritage values, natural hazard management, infrastructure provision, and sustainable economic development are all topics covered by the TPPs.
"The policies have been independently reviewed by the Tasmanian Planning Commission and are the result of extensive consultation and collaboration with councils and key stakeholders," Minister Vincent said.
"Whether in Kingborough, Circular Head or Dorset, everyone will apply common planning policies, saving time and improving certainty.
"The transition period before they formally come into effect gives councils, developers and other parties involved in local planning time to incorporate them into their processes."
