Six Lives Saved On Christmas Day

Police in the Rescue Coordination Centre in Williamstown coordinated with several other agencies to rescue six people on Christmas Day.

In the first incident police were called to Lake King in Paynesville following reports a kayaker was in trouble about 1.30pm.

Officers were told the man, who hadn't been seen for about two hours, was seen struggling before his kayak rolled.

Water Police, Air Wing and the coast guard searched for the Hoppers Crossing man before he was spotted by the Air Wing just before 3pm.

A smoke marker was dropped by the Air Wing, highlighting the man's location, where the 41-year-old was picked up by the coastguard and returned unharmed to shore.

Police were also called out to Westernport Bay after a mother and her two teenage daughters got into difficulty near the Corinella jetty about 2.10pm.

The trio in kayaks, attempted to retrieve an adrift kayak when the current and strong winds swept them a significant distance from shore.

The women who were all wearing life jackets ended up in the water about one kilometre from the shore line.

A local unit attended and spotted the women in the water before police coordinated the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to attend.

The women were all winched to safety and dropped back to Corinella without injury.

The third rescue involved two paddleboarders who set out from Portarlington about 3pm.

The pair launched from the Portarlington caravan park jetty before the conditions quickly deteriorated and they drifted out into the bay.

A family member raised the alarm and contacted Triple Zero (000) shortly after 5pm after the pair failed to return.

Local police units on the ground, Air Wing, Life Saving Victoria and Queenscliff Coast Guards assisted in the search before Air Wing officers spotted the duo.

They were laying on their paddleboards and waving for assistance.

The pair, who were not wearing lifejackets, had been swept more than 10 kilometres from Portarlington into Wyndham Harbour where they were found about 6.20pm.

Apart from being exhausted and cold they were luckily not physically injured.

Officers from the Water Police Squad successfully pulled the pair and their paddleboards from the water.
