Six teens charged after throwing chemicals into Sydney Harbour, NSW

Six teenage boys will face court after they allegedly damaged a ferry and contaminated waters in Sydney Harbour this morning, NSW Police say.

Just after midnight today, a group of males allegedly boarded an out-of-service ferry at Balls Head Bay, causing damage to the vessel.

The males also allegedly threw fire extinguishers and paint overboard, causing their contents to leak into the surrounding water.

Police were alerted to the incident by a nearby witness and although the group fled, they were arrested a short distance away by responding officers.

The teens were taken to North Sydney Police Station where they were charged in relation to the matter.

They were charged with larceny, wilfully damage vessel, destroy or damage property and a harmful substance jettisoned.

The four juveniles, all aged 17, were granted conditional bail and will appear in a children’s court on Monday 13 March 2017.

The 18-year-old was also granted conditional bail and will appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on Friday 10 March 2017.
