Six treated for smoke inhalation after suspicious fire in Marrickville

Six people have been taken to hospital with smoke inhalation as police investigate a fire as suspicious in Marrickville, NSW Police say.

About 1.20am (Wednesday 2 May 2018), emergency services were called to a shop on Illawarra Road, Marrickville, after reports of a fire.

Neighbouring units were evacuated as fire fighters extinguished the blaze.

Six occupants of a unit above the shop were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, before three were taken to Prince of Wales Hospital and three were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for observation.

Officers from the Inner West Police Area Command established a crime scene, which will be examined by specialist police.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire and are treating it as suspicious.
