Skatepark In Merimbula Officially Open

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

The Merimbula Skatepark is now officially open, providing the local community with a vibrant new space to stay active, connect with others, and enjoy the outdoors.

Located at Ford Park, the skatepark offers a safe and inclusive environment for skaters of all ages and skill levels.

It replaces the ageing facility at Berrambool and was designed in collaboration with the Sapphire Coast Skatepark Association and Baseplate, ensuring it meets the needs of the local skating community.

The project was made possible through a $500,000 investment from the Australian Government under the Investing in Our Communities program, which funds open space improvements, sporting infrastructure and other community priorities nationwide.

The skatepark boasts five new concrete skateboard features and two custom skate rails.

There is also a new path to better link the skatepark to other recreational facilities in the area, including a local play space and the recently upgraded netball and basketball courts, creating a central hub for young people and families to gather.

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain attended the official opening and said it was great to see Merimbula gain another open space that promotes active lifestyles, youth engagement, and community wellbeing.

"This project was largely driven by local young people and the skating community.

"I'm thrilled to see the new skatepark now open, meaning locals and visitors to the Bega Valley region can take advantage of it now and for years to come.

"By being a place for social and sporting engagement, it will help support mental and physical health among young people, which is incredibly important.

"It will also unlock more opportunities for local community groups to hold events such as skateboard competitions.

"We promised $500,000 for this project and we have delivered for the Merimbula community.

"I'd also like to thank the Sapphire Coast Skate Association who provided $30,500 towards the design work, and Bega Valley Shire Council who provided co-funding of $90,500 towards construction.

"If you haven't been down to check out the new skatepark yet - what are you waiting for?" said Kristy McBain.
