Slowing Down For Safer Streets

In 2026, we're introducing a safer 40km/h speed limit on selected local streets in Armadale, Malvern and Malvern East.

The change to the lower speed will improve safety and create streets that are comfortable to walk, ride, connect with others and move around safely.

Over the next few months, we will visit each area to install 40km/h signs that will signal the change to the new safer speed. The new 40km/h areas are:

Armadale – area bounded by:

  • Malvern Road, Glenferrie Road, High Street and Orrong Road.

  • Dandenong Road, Glenferrie Road and Wattletree Road.

  • High Street, Orrong Road, Glenferrie Road and Wattletree Road.

Malvern – area bounded by:

  • Tooronga Road, High Street, Glenferrie Road and Wattletree Road.

  • Tooronga Road, Wattletree Road, Glenferrie Road and Dandenong Road.

Malvern East – area bounded by:

  • Darling Road, Malvern Road, Wattletree Road, Burke Road and Waverley Road.

The change to 40km/h in these neighbourhoods expands on existing 40km/h limits in South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor, and parts of Toorak and Glen Iris.

This road safety initiative is part of our Road Safety Improvement Program that will deliver a range of measures to improve road safety across the city. It aligns with Council's Transport and Road Safety Strategy and supports the Victorian Government's target to halve fatal and serious injury crashes by 2030, and state and national targets to reduce road deaths to zero by 2050.
