Smart Water Meter Project Reaches New Milestone

Toowoomba Region Sports Precinct

Toowoomba Regional Council's (TRC) smart water meter project has recently reached a new milestone having successfully installed 50,000 water meters across the Toowoomba Region.

TRC's Strategic Water Planning and Capital Delivery portfolio spokesperson Deputy Mayor Councillor Rebecca Vonhoff said this project represented a new era in water consumption efficiency.

"The smart water meters totally change the way we use and save water," Cr Vonhoff said.

"Residents can monitor their water usage more effectively so there are fewer surprises when they receive their water rates. Council will be able to detect any leaks within our water infrastructure earlier and with more accuracy and this will save water as well as money."

"Reaching this milestone of 50,000 installations means the project is 77 per cent complete. This has been a big investment and one that we made because we're thinking long term."

The smart water meter project is expected to be finished by September next year with just over 15,000 units left to install.

"As part of installing a smart water meter at a property, residents receive a flyer explaining the benefits and how to register to the Toowoomba Water app. This app allows residents to view their meter's data and track their water usage."

"To date only 8,300 residents, or 16.4 per cent of people who have received a new meter, have downloaded the Toowoomba Water app. I use it myself and find it's really helpful, it's obvious when I've had a big day of washing for example. I encourage anyone who hasn't yet downloaded the app to do, so they can track their water usage and save themselves money."

"You can download the Toowoomba Water app from the App Store or Google Play store or access it online at water.tr.qld.gov.au."

TRC are working alongside Optus, ETS, Iota and GreenBe to deliver this project.

"I want to thank our partners for their role in providing our Region a solution to digitally monitoring our water usage."

"This project is an investment into our Region's future, by actively saving water and improving our water security."
