South Australia Police (SAPOL) is committed to preventing further tragedy on the roads this Easter long weekend as Operation Safe Holidays takes place across the state.
From Thursday 2 April to Monday 6 April, police will be targeting dangerous driving behaviours, on metropolitan and regional roads, during one of the busiest and highest-risk periods of the year.
The operation comes at a sobering time, following recent crashes including one at Birdwood where three people lost their lives.
Officer in Charge of Traffic Services Branch, Superintendent Shane Johnson, said the incident serves as a devastating reminder of the tragedies that can happen on our roads.
"As we head into the Easter long weekend, we're asking all South Australians to reflect on the consequences their choices on the road can result in," Superintendent Johnson said.
"We know the behaviours that lead to serious crashes, and they continue to appear far too often."
"Drivers need to make a conscious decision every time they get behind the wheel to slow down, avoid distraction, and follow the road rules. If everyone takes responsibility for their actions, we can reduce the number of lives lost on our roads."
During the 2025 Easter operation, speeding was the most common offence, with 925 detections, followed by dangerous driving with 303 detections, highlighting the need to reinforce road safety messaging. Tragically, that same period saw one life lost and 11 serious injuries on the road.
Superintendent Johnson wants to remind the community of the real and lasting impact of road trauma on families and communities.
"These are not just statistics – they are real people, and their loss leaves empty seats at dinner tables across our state," he said.
Police urge motorists to slow down, take regular breaks, and drive safely to arrive safely at their destination this Easter.
