The Australian Government is inviting input on a draft soil carbon method for the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF).
The new method would help to reduce measurement costs, increase flexibility and support greater uptake of soil carbon projects across Australia. This will make it easier for farmers to be rewarded for their contribution to reducing greenhouse gases emissions.
Under the proposed method, agricultural activities that store carbon in soil can generate Australian Carbon Credit Units, such as:
- improving fertiliser application
- re-establishing pasture
- modifying grazing practices.
Soil carbon is one of 5 priority methods being developed in 2021 under the ERF.
The government's first Low Emissions Technology Statement also identified reducing the cost of soil carbon measurement as a priority for accelerating low emissions technologies.
