South West Rocks to host epic national adventure race

Kempsey Shire Council

South West Rocks has been chosen as the start and finish line for the Australian leg of the Mountain Designs 48 hour GeoQuest Adventure Race.

The adventure race involves teams of four where each competitor completes 48 hours of non-stop endurance racing in the major sporting disciplines of trekking, mountain biking and kayaking.

Held annually on the June long weekend, the location of the course is moved each year to a different area to pose exciting new challenges for competitors.

Council Group Manager Commercial Business, Peter Allen says the race is expected to bring 400 competitors, support crew and family and friends, which will be a significant boost to the local economy.

"The event not only supports the local economy it also helps to promote South West Rocks and our region by showcasing what we have to offer the adventure tourism market," Mr Allen said.

"I encourage everyone to come along to South West Rocks over the long weekend to cheer on these extreme athletes and take the rare opportunity to witness this amazing race."

GeoQuest Event director Chris Dixon says he's excited for this year's race and hinted there's something different planned that hasn't been done before.

"We're very excited to be heading to South West Rocks for 2023, it's a spectacular area with magnificent trails, ancient forests, rugged coastlines, and plenty of hidden hinterland secret spots we can't wait to show off," Mr Dixon said.

There is also a Geo-Half adventure race that runs simultaneously with the Mountain Designs GeoQuest. The Geo-Half covers only half the distance, but teams have the full 48hrs to complete it.
