An investigation is underway after nine people were injured – one critically – when a speedway car crashed at Walcha in the state's west earlier tonight.
Emergency services were called to Walcha showground on Derby Street about 6.15pm (Saturday 15 November 2025), after a vehicle competing in a race crashed through a fence and hit a mobile grandstand.
By-standers rendered assistance before NSW Ambulance paramedics took seven men and two women – aged between 20 and 75 – to Walcha District Hospital.
Of those nine people, a 54-year-old man suffered critical injuries with another three people being seriously injured. All four are expected to be transported to major hospitals overnight.
Officers attached to Oxley Police District have been told the 27-year-old speedway car driver was involved in an on-track collision immediately before his vehicle crashed through the fence.
Specialists from the Crash Investigation Unit are en route to Walcha to examine the scene.
