As part of 34 Squadron's ongoing commitment to a positive workplace culture, the Air Force Adaptive Culture (AFAC) team recently facilitated a 'Speaking Up: Fostering Respect at Work' session during the squadron's Induction Day.
Led by Warrant Officer Lindy Turnbull and Roberta Ruffolo, the session aimed to equip personnel with strategies to promote respect and address negative workplace behaviours.
In 2024, 34 Squadron worked with AFAC to enhance team culture, launching a series of tailored workshops focused on strengthening team communications.
AFAC has already conducted a successful session on managing challenging conversations and will continue working with 34 Squadron throughout the year.
Dr Ruffolo, AFAC Learning and Development Lead, plays a key role in shaping these initiatives for Air Force.
"We designed these sessions to help members identify and address negative behaviours, understand their impact, and develop practical intervention strategies," Dr Ruffolo said.
"AFAC takes a customised approach by consulting with squadron leadership to tailor sessions that align with their specific goals and needs."
'Our squadron's success is built on a strong workplace culture, where people feel empowered, valued and connected.'
Commanding Officer 34 Squadron Wing Commander Sarah-Jane Leech emphasised the importance of fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
"Our squadron's success is built on a strong workplace culture, where people feel empowered, valued and connected," Wing Commander Leech said.
"The Squadron Warrant Officer Matt Cribbes and I are working closely with AFAC team to provide our members with the right tools and skills that align with the Defence values and behaviours."
The initiative has received positive feedback, and Wing Commander Leech encouraged other squadrons and units to engage AFAC in similar culture-building efforts.
Deputy Director AFAC Wing Commander David Holder highlighted AFAC's ability to support team culture activities.
"Our sessions have been well received and cover topics such as difficult conversations, change mindset and bystander behaviour," Wing Commander Holder said.
"We can facilitate sessions or help teams run activities themselves, and we welcome requests."
