Stage 3 Changes Benefit Women, Sub-45K Earners

Widening the 'Stage 3' tax cuts package to include those on less than $45,000 a year would extend benefits to 1.58 million more workers, mainly women, according to analysis by the McKell Institute. The 'Stage 3' package as proposed by the previous government would only benefit workers who make $45,000 a year or more. - Number of workers who would receive a tax cut if the Stage 3 package was altered to include those on sub-45k income: 1,586,100. - Number of women: 1,007,226 (63.5 per cent) - Number of men: 578,873 (36.5 per cent) Edward Cavanough, chief executive, McKell Institute: "If the parliament was to proceed with the status quo Stage Three package, 1.5 million Australians will miss out and most of those will be women. "If the parliament adjusts the Stage Three package to include those making less thank $45,000 a year it could make a significant difference to the lives of low-income workers. "1.5 million workers who were scheduled to get nothing would receive some benefit if brackets below the $45,000 mark are added. "Given the cost of living crisis, and its disproportionate impact on women, including those on less than $45,000 a year could make a very significant social difference."
