Standing Up For Tasmanians On Marinus

Liberal Tasmania
  • Jeremy Rockliff Premier, Minister for Tourism, Minister for Trade and Major Investment, Member for Braddon
  • The Tasmanian Government strongly supports our renewable energy future and backs energy developers who are progressing projects in the State.

    A re-elected Liberal Government will ensure Tasmanians get the full benefits of the Marinus interconnector with no more of the cost.

    Premier Jeremy Rockliff said energy is more than just a sector; it underpins our economic activity and standard of living, it provides jobs, and it supports the growth of our industries.

    While there are significant economic benefits for Tasmania, the Tasmanian Government will only sign up if:

    • Marinus must deliver lower power prices to Tasmanian consumers than without it;
    • Direct connected customers will not bear transmission impact of Marinus;
    • Tasmanian consumers are protected;
    • Economic and financial benefits to Tasmania stack up; and
    • Tasmanian taxpayers will not be required to contribute further funding to the project.

    "This project is something the mainland needs as part of the energy transition", the Premier said.

    "We've always said this project must stack up for Tasmania before it proceeds.

    "That's why we're moving through a careful, transparent process that ensures the decision we make is the right one for Tasmanians.

    "It's why we are taking action to protect Tasmanian energy consumers, households, business and industry and keep power prices as low as possible, having the Australian Government to contribute more to protect Tasmanian customers.

    "We will progress with Marinus if it means lower power prices for Tasmanians, at no additional cost to Tasmanian taxpayers."

    "We will do this while ensuring we retain important voting rights of this project.

    "We are not walking away and letting Victoria and the Australian Government dictate what happens in Tasmania, without a say like State Labor who cannot stand up for Tasmania's best interests to their Federal counterparts."

    A majority Liberal Government is the only way to keep Tasmania moving forward with certainty, stability, and efficiency.

    This election comes down to one choice: a strong Liberal team with a real plan or another merry-go-round of chaos.

    Let's get on with it.

    Let's finish the job for Tasmania.
