Federation Council acknowledges the significant community interest and concern regarding the ongoing structural deterioration of the historic Star Hotel, located on Sanger Street, Corowa.
In response to community concern, Council provides the following update to advise the community of next steps being taken to ensure community safety.
General Manager Adrian Butler said following the issuance of multiple emergency orders and in response to the continued safety risks posed by the building's facade and verandah, including reports of falling debris, Council is implementing further protective measures.
"Effective immediately, Council will be installing protective hoarding and tunneling along the footpath adjacent to the Star Hotel," he said.
"This protective structure is an essential measure to shield pedestrians from potential hazards associated with the building's structural integrity. Council urges all members of the public to strictly adhere to the established pedestrian detours."
Mr Butler said as previously communicated, Council has initiated legal proceedings in the Land and Environment Court following the owner's non-compliance with the issued emergency orders.
"A detailed report providing an update on these legal proceedings, outlining the actions and next steps for the property, will be presented to Council at the December Ordinary Meeting," he said.
"This meeting will include further information on the legal process aimed at resolving this complex issue and ensuring further remedial work is undertaken as necessary. Council appreciates the community's patience and cooperation as it manages this challenging situation, which involves both public safety and the appropriate process for dealing with a non-compliant private property owner."
Council is committed to achieving a safe and responsible outcome for the Corowa community and will continue to provide updates as available.
