State of State highlights Liberal's failures over seven years

Tasmanian Labor
  • State of the State Address highlights seven years of failures
  • More work needed to address health and housing crisis
  • It has taken PESRAC and Labor's fully costed jobs plan, Working for all Tasmanians, for the Premier to act
  • Peter Gutwein's State of the State Address clearly highlights key areas where the Liberal Government has failed over its seven year tenure.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said while today's address contained some welcome measures, it is disappointing that it has taken the PESRAC report and Labor's fully costed plan jobs plan, Working for all Tasmanians, for the government to finally come up with some ideas and commit to act.

"Today the Premier highlighted many areas that have been neglected over the past seven years under this Liberal Government," Ms White said.

"Areas including skills and training, housing and health have reached crisis point under this government and now Peter Gutwein is desperately trying to make amends.

"Labor welcomes some of today's initiatives - many of which mirror policies outlined in Labor's fully costed Working for Tasmania jobs plan.

"We are deeply concerned about Peter Gutwein's agenda for TasTAFE. This government has chronically underfunded TasTAFE and set it up to fail.

"Peter Gutwein's announcement isn't about the future development of TasTAFE, it's about going to war with them.

"The modest initiatives announced today for housing and health also won't go far enough to address the crisis – meanwhile, Tasmanians continue to struggle with homelessness and unemployment.

"Peter Gutwein and his government are good at making announcements but have a terrible track record of delivering.

"Only Labor has a fully costed plan to create 35,000 jobs and to provide ongoing support to Tasmanian businesses and workers in stark contrast to the government's complacent, one-dimensional policy of failing to deliver on its promises."
