Statement - Boom gates long gone as traffic starts under Davis Road underpass

The new underpass at Davis Road in Kelmscott officially opened last Friday night, only weeks after the permanent closure of the Denny Avenue level crossing.

The new underpass forms part of the rail-over-road solution for METRONET's Denny Avenue Level Crossing Removal project, which has lifted more than 850 metres of the rail line over Davis Road to facilitate construction of the new underpass crossing for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Previously ranked as one of the RAC's riskiest roads two years in a row, this inaugural METRONET level crossing removal project will increase safety, reduce road congestion and revitalise the Kelmscott town centre.

Davis Road's proximity to the Kelmscott town centre made it the best location for an alternative crossing, and it will soon be widened to four lanes to make the journey even smoother for motorists.

Meanwhile, works are continuing on the project to finalise construction on connecting roads, install new traffic lights at key intersections to enable smoother traffic flow, upgrade Albany Highway and add a signalised pedestrian crossing near Kelmscott Station and the new station plaza.

The entire project is supporting more than 215 jobs and is expected to be completed later this year.

As stated by Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts the Hon Paul Fletcher MP:

"This is a significant milestone for this important project, which the Morrison Government is supporting with a $54.9 million funding commitment.

"The new underpass will ensure the road is safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists while also providing commuters with a smoother, safer option whether they're travelling on the road or on the train line above."

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Only weeks ago we were at Denny Avenue waving goodbye to the boom gates as they lowered for the last time.

"The team have done an amazing job of removing the boom gates, finishing the bridge and laying down the rail.

"Cars can now drive under the Davis Road underpass, completely avoiding the rail line.

"There will still be disruptions in place as work is finished along Albany Highway and in revitalising the Kelmscott Town Centre - we thank everyone in advance for their patience."
