82,000 Queenslanders work in our resources sector. Those hardworking men and women deserve a safety regulator they can trust.
That's why I commissioned an independent review of Resources Safety and Health Queensland, to ensure the system is doing its job and delivers on the Crisafulli Government's commitment to making Queensland safer.
Today I tabled that report. Its findings are sobering.
The review makes it clear that Queensland's resources safety framework is letting down the very workers it aims to protect. Among the many issues it identified, the review found weaknesses in governance, confusion around roles, and a lack of clear accountability.
The Crisafulli Government will act swiftly.
As a priority, we will establish a new independent Governing Board to strengthen oversight, streamline advisory structures, and remove duplication. The role of the Resources Safety and Health Commissioner will be discontinued, with its oversight and advisory functions transferred to the new Board to provide clearer lines of responsibility and stronger accountability.
Every worker deserves to come home safe. These reforms will deliver a modern, accountable system that puts safety first and restores confidence in Queensland's resources safety framework.
I extend my sincere thanks to Professor Susan Johnston for her comprehensive and independent review, and the more than 150 individuals from across industry, unions, government and RSHQ who contributed to it.
