Statement On AEMO Review

Peak energy industry bodies have called on Energy Ministers to ensure industry is thoroughly involved and consulted in the reported review of Australian Energy Market Operator's (AEMO) governance arrangements.

Key representative bodies, the Australian Energy Council, the Clean Energy Council, and Energy Networks Australia want to ensure the review process is open, transparent, and genuinely engages with the industry.

The group welcomes initiatives to improve market outcomes and functionality of the organisation to minimise duplication of its processes.

As the transition progresses, the role of AEMO has never been more important. It is critical this review carefully considers the implications of AEMO's governance structure on its ability to maintain its independence and the security of the grid as it continues to evolve.

The peak bodies said it is vital the industry was a central stakeholder in the review process given their role as both members and funders of AEMO's operations.

This review will have implications for the National Electricity Market and the WA energy market and should be open and transparent to achieve the best outcomes for consumers.

Our members stand ready to engage fully in a genuine review that can ensure AEMO remains fit for purpose.
