The Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of Western Australia welcomes the Australian Government's announcement that it will provide $1.3 billion to help businesses keep apprentices employed as the economy adjusts to the coronavirus outbreak.
The support for apprentices is part of the $17.6 billion stimulus package announced on Wednesday 12 March.
CEO Murray Thomas said, "The Prime Minister has shown responsible leadership by acting quickly to commit funds on this scale in these uncertain times."
"Employers across the plumbing industry were already under pressure. The coronavirus has placed additional stresses on cashflow and supply chains."
Mr Thomas added, "Plumbing and gasfitting businesses in Western Australia employ over 1000 apprentices. Many of these jobs will be at risk unless there is continued government support."
"Small businesses who train plumbers provide an essential service but are always vulnerable to economic downturns. The coronavirus is a massive, sudden and unpredictable blow and it is in the national interest to ensure we do not lose a generation of skilled professional plumbers."
"We call on the Australian Government to be prepared to expand its funding package in the future if required."
The Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of Western Australia will closely monitor the impact of the coronavirus and work with the Australian and Western Australian Governments to ensure the plumbing industry receives the best possible advice and support.
