A 46-year-old suspended Australian Federal Police (AFP) officer was today sentenced to 22 months imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 11 months, for leaking internal police information in exchange for money.
The officer was suspended on 1 May 2014, after allegations of his wrongdoing surfaced as a result of a joint taskforce investigation between the AFP, the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity (ACLEI), the NSW Police Force and the NSW Crime Commission, Australian Federal Police say.
The man pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving a benefit which would tend to influence a Commonwealth public official in the exercise of their duties, and today was sentenced in relation to these charges.
AFP members are expected to act at all times in a manner that upholds the AFP’s core values, and the organisation’s reputation and integrity. Our members are trusted to hold sensitive information, and the public expects and deserves that police information is never leaked to outside sources.
While disappointed this behaviour has occurred, the AFP recognises the investigation to uncover this behaviour involved skilful investigative work in a testing environment, where members were faced with the uncomfortable task of investigating one of their own in conjunction with ACLEI.
The AFP thanks this joint taskforce for uncovering this behaviour, so the suspended member could be dealt with appropriately by the courts.
