Statement On White Dog Hotel In Lilydale

Yarra Ranges Shire Council

Council has commenced emergency works to stabilise the front façade of the White Dog Hotel in Lilydale, to ensure there is no safety risk to the general public, following ongoing concerns about the condition of the building's external verandah posts.

Council officers issued a Building Notice in response to ongoing visible deterioration, requiring the property owner to undertake repairs to maintain safety standards. As the owner initially did not complete the works in accordance with the timeframes of the notice, Council is now able to undertake the emergency works to address the issue.

The owner has been in contact with Council, and we expect to hand over works to the owner. Any costs incurred by Council will be recovered from the owner.

We are pleased to see the owner taking action on the building.

The former White Dog Hotel is one of Lilydale's oldest buildings and holds significant historical and community value.

Council has engaged in numerous discussions with the owner over recent years to encourage appropriate maintenance and the restoration of the building. We remain committed to working constructively with the owner to encourage and support the preservation of this important local heritage site.

Council shares the community's appreciation for this landmark and supports its restoration and revitalisation as a positive contributor to the town's character.

As the building is privately owned, Council's ability to require restoration is limited. However, we continue to monitor the site closely, take action where possible, and maintain open communication with the owner in the hope of seeing this iconic property play a vibrant role in Lilydale's future.
