Council withdrew the October/November 2025 edition of Let's Talk Bayside magazine after images containing a political symbol was included in an article promoting Council's library services.
The publication of the image contravened Council's Media Policy which states that Council communications must remain neutral.
The symbol was a Palestinian flag covering a map of the state of Israel worn as a necklace pendant by a young Bayside resident. This political symbolism contravenes Council's Media Policy.
Council received letters of complaint on the publication of the images to the October 2025 Council meeting. Bayside's Chief Executive Officer responded to these questions and the response is included in the meeting minutes here.
As the images included a person under the age of 18, Council has sought to maintain their privacy in our communications on this matter.
Council officers have had ongoing contact with the young person impacted by the decision to withdraw the magazine. The Chief Executive Officer and senior staff have met with the young person, their parent and support person to provide support following withdrawal of the magazine. The Chief Executive Officer has also acknowledged the volunteer work of the young person and recognised their contribution to Council and the community.
Council remains committed to promoting social cohesion and inclusivity and will continue to ensure the neutrality of Council communications.
