Stolen car injures officer, police vehicle damaged; teens charged, NSW

Two teenagers have been charged after allegedly injuring a police officer and damaging a police vehicle in the Lake Illawarra area overnight, NSW Police say.

About 11pm (Saturday 11 August 2018), officers from Lake Illawarra Police District were patrolling near an apartment complex on Northcliffe Drive, Warrawong, as a Subaru Outback, which had been reported stolen from a house in Bulli on Friday (10 August 2018), drove into the complex.

As the Subaru tried to exit the complex driveway, it allegedly drove towards a male senior constable and a male constable before hitting a police vehicle, with a male senior constable inside.

It’s alleged the Subaru drove into the police vehicle several times before crashing into a large steel bin and a parked Mitsubishi Triton.

One of the male senior constables suffered hand and neck injuries; however, he did not require medical treatment. No one else was injured.

Officers arrested the driver, a 16-year-old boy, and passenger, a 14-year-old boy, and they were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

The 16-year-old boy was charged with never licensed person drive vehicle on road, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, negligent driving, intimidate police officer in execution of duty, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, and use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

The 14-year-old boy was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.

Both were refused bail to appear before a children’s court today (Sunday 12 August 2018).
