Stolen firearms recovered after investigation into theft at Gunnedah

Two firearms have been recovered following a break, enter and steal from a vehicle in the state's north east.

Between 9.30pm Wednesday 4 September 2019 and 6.30am Thursday 5 September 2019, two firearms were stolen from the footwell of a vehicle parked on Little Barber Street at Gunnedah.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District were notified of the theft after the ute was found resting against a boundary fence with both firearms and several other items missing.

Two boys, aged 17, were arrested at Gunnedah this week in relation to the incident and appeared before a children's court Wednesday (11 September 2019). They were bail refused to reappear on Tuesday 17 September 2019.

About 2.20pm yesterday (Thursday 12 September 2019), the two stolen firearms were surrendered to Gunnedah Police Station.

Police allege both firearms had been destroyed by fire.

Further investigations will be made by Oxley Rural Crime Prevention Team and numerous additional charges are expected to be laid.
