About 3.45pm on Monday (9 April 2018), police responded to a report of a shooting in Northcliffe Drive at Berkeley.

It’s alleged a shot had been fired from inside a stolen Toyota Rav4 hitting the front passenger door. The car sped away, travelling west on Northcliffe Drive.

Following inquiries by police from Lake Illawarra Police District, a 19-year-old man was arrested about 11.45am yesterday (Wednesday 11 April 2018).

He was charged and has been remanded in custody to reappear at Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday 13 June 2018.

About 3.30pm yesterday, emergency services were called to a vehicle on fire in bushland at Berkeley.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and the stolen Toyota Rav4 was seized for forensic examination.

Following a search of the surrounding area, police also located a firearm in bushland.

The firearm will undergo ballistic examination to determine if it is linked to other shootings in the area, including the murder of Nathan Costello at Unanderra on Valentine’s Day (Wednesday 14 February 2018).

Local detectives are appealing for anyone with information about the vehicle fire, or who noticed something suspicious in the area yesterday afternoon, to contact Lake Illawarra Police Station.

Police are urging anyone with information that may assist investigators to call Crime Stoppers.
