Parkes Shire Library has successfully hosted its second Living Library event as part of the NSW Seniors Festival, offering a unique opportunity for community members to connect through storytelling.

Three "books" - Greg Morrissey, Bob Cocks and Cr Joy Paddison - shared powerful and personal stories with participants. Their experiences ranged from a lifelong passion for cricket, to navigating grief and hardship as a funeral director, and making the decision to stand for public office later in life.

As with the inaugural event, "readers" embraced the opportunity to listen, learn and reflect, enjoying meaningful conversations and gaining new perspectives.

Participants described the experience as both engaging and rewarding. Bob Cocks said it was a "pleasurable experience," while Greg Morrissey noted it gave him "a considerable feeling of contentment and satisfaction." Cr Joy Paddison described it as "a genuinely lovely way to spend time together."

The Living Library concept, which originated in Denmark and has since spread worldwide, allows "readers" to borrow a "book" for 20 minutes, engaging in one-on-one conversations. The initiative aims to foster understanding, strengthen social connections, and celebrate the diverse experiences that shape the Parkes Shire community.

Parkes Shire Library & Information Services Team Leader Tracy Dawson encouraged broader community participation in future events.

"We would love to invite everyone in our community to take part in the Living Library as the program continues," Ms Dawson said.

"We extend a special invitation to those who are new to our towns. Come and share your story - where have you come from, and why have you chosen to live in Parkes? The Living Library is a wonderful way to build connections and deepen understanding across our community."

Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on Council's website, Facebook page and local media for details of the next Living Library event.

The Living Library project is proudly funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Social Cohesion Grants for Local Government.

The event formed part of a vibrant program celebrating the NSW Seniors Festival over the past two weeks. Seniors from across Parkes Shire and surrounding townships embraced this year's theme, Live Life in Colour, enjoying a diverse range of free workshops, performances, social gatherings and wellbeing activities.

Parkes Shire Council extends its sincere thanks to all participants, volunteers and presenters who contributed to the success of this year's program. It was inspiring to see so many people connecting, learning and celebrating the valuable contributions seniors make to the community.
