The Warrnambool Breakwater and boat ramp have been temporarily closed to the public after the historic structure was damaged during rough weather over the weekend.
Hand rails, kick rails, concrete capping and sections of the Breakwater wall were damaged by pounding waves, wind and rain.
All staircases to the top walkway are closed off with some sections of the stainless steel kick rail hanging loose.
"Once the weather is more favourable, Council staff will make a more detailed assessment of the damage before we develop a program of repairs," Council's Director City Infrastructure David Leahy said.
"We're hopeful that by the end of the week we'll have a clearer picture of the work that is required.
"The unfortunate reality is that the Breakwater could be closed for a number of weeks.
"This closure is designed to eliminate access to the upper walkway areas.
"And while boats cannot be launched for now, the works team is clearing debris and tidying up the facility to enable it to re-open this week. Notice of a re-opening will be provided.
"It's important that the public stays clear of the Breakwater.
"Council will have discussions with the Department of Transport about the condition of the Breakwater and what needs to be done.
"The Breakwater is owned by the Victorian Government and any repairs or renewal will need to be funded by the State."
