Backgrounder

#1. Enhanced Tourism Research and Marketing for the Northwest Territories

  • CanNor is investing $1,564,444 and Northwest Territories Tourism is investing $391,161 for this two year project.
  • Funding will go to Northwest Territories Tourism, the destination marketing organization for the territory, to undertake tourism marketing activities in targeted markets, conduct market research and launch web-based tools to attract visitors.
  • The total cost of the project is $1,955,605.

#2. Northern Capacity Development and Tourism Sector Promotion

  • CanNor is investing $284,000 for this two year project with a further $38,000 from the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), $31,000 from Le Conseil de développement économique des Territories du Nord-Ouest , $17,000 from the Réseau de développement économique et d'employabilité, and $46,000 in a joint investment from Employment and Social Development Canada and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
  • Funding will go to towards tourism promotion activities, attracting investment from key francophone markets, and providing the francophone community in NWT with entrepreneurial capacity-building tools and training.
  • The total cost of the project is $416,000.

#3. Indigenous Cultural Tourism Development Workshops

  • CanNor invested $122,000 and the GNWT invested $56,750 for this one year project.
  • Funding went towards the organization of Indigenous cultural tourism workshops in all five regions of the NWT.
  • The total cost of the project was $178,750.

#4. Community Campground Improvements

  • CanNor invested $31,791 in this one-year project with a further $40,000 investment from the GNWT and $34,400 from the Pehdzeh Ki First Nation.
  • Funding went towards improving tourism infrastructure in the community of Wrigley by renovating and installing new facilities in two existing campgrounds.
  • The total cost of the project was $106,191.

#5. NWT Film Industry Special Initiatives

  • CanNor is investing $200,000 and the GNWT is investing $50,000 for this two-year project.
  • Funding will go towards the implementation of a marketing program to promote the film industry in the NWT and attract more outside productions to the territory.
  • The total cost of the project is $250,000.

#6. Gwich'in Cultural Experience Retreat

  • CanNor invested $54,240 in this one year project with a further $7,560 investment from the GNWT and $8,504 from the Gwich'in Tribal Council.
  • Funding went towards a feasibility study to determine how to transform an unused wellness centre in the Beaufort Delta into a Gwich'in Indigenous Cultural Experience Retreat.
  • The total cost of the project was $70,304.

#7. Northern Centre for Sustainability Feasibility

  • CanNor invested $104,280 in this one-year project with a further $13,500 investment from Tides Canada and $12,570 from Ecology North.
  • Funding went towards feasibility and planning work for the Northern Centre for Sustainability, which will be the first carbon-neutral building in Canada's North.
  • The total cost of the project was $130,350.

#8. Trailblazers and Small Business Week Conferences

  • CanNor is investing $124,720 in this two-year project with a further $14,000 investment from the City of Yellowknife, $10,000 from the GNWT and $7,180 from the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce (YCC).
  • Funding is going to the YCC to host three business capacity development conferences, including two for women entrepreneurs and one in support of Small Business Week 2019. The first women entrepreneur project took place in Yellowknife on March 8, 2019, during International Women's Day.
  • The total cost of the project is $155,900.

#9. CKLB Radio Equipment Technology Upgrade

  • CanNor is investing $247,000 in this two year project with a further $27,000 investment from the Native Communication Society of the NWT (NCS) and $10,000 from Canadian Heritage.
  • Funding will go to the NCS to upgrade its satellite communication infrastructure. These upgrades are required to enable the NCS to continue broadcasting Indigenous languages programming in the NWT.
  • The total cost of the project is $284,000.
