Homicide Squad detectives are investigating after a woman was stabbed to death and another was wounded in Sydney's CBD yesterday.
About 2pm (Tuesday 13 August 2019), emergency services responded following reports of a man walking along York Street, Sydney, armed with a kitchen knife.
As police made their way to the location, there were multiple reports the man had stabbed someone near the corner of King and Clarence streets.
Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics located a 41-year-old woman inside a hotel, who had a stab wound to the shoulder.
She was taken to St Vincent's Hospital for treatment, where she remains in a stable condition.
A short time later, members of the public, assisted by Fire and Rescue NSW, detained the man on Wynyard Street, before police attended and arrested him.
During a search of the man, police seized a mobile phone and USB stick, which are undergoing forensic analysis. A knife was also seized at the scene.
The 20-year-old man was taken to Day Street Police Station, before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he has undergone surgery for a laceration to his knee.
He remains under police guard and is continuing to undergo treatment. It is unclear when he will be deemed medically fit to speak with investigators.
Just after 3pm, as police were conducting proactive patrols of the area, they were alerted to another injured woman in a unit on Clarence Street.
The 24-year-old woman had sustained a laceration to her neck and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Initial inquiries indicate the man had attended the unit for an appointment about 1.30pm and was captured on CCTV leaving the building about 1.50pm.
Crime scenes were established at various locations in the CBD, which were examined by specialist forensic officers.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad, assisted by Central Metropolitan Region, have established Strike Force Lalchere, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Their inquiries will also be supported by the Terrorism Investigation Squad.
As part of their investigations, detectives executed two search warrants at Blacktown and Marayong.
Police have seized electronic devices, which will undergo forensic analysis.
A significant canvass has been conducted in the CBD, which will continue today (Wednesday 14 August 2019), and investigators are urging anyone who has not yet spoken with police to come forward.
In particular, they are seeking all CCTV, dashcam, and mobile phone vision, and are reminding the community that even if their vision has been posted online or provided to media – or even similar to something they've seen – a copy should still be provided to police as soon as possible.
