Structure Fire - East Arnhem

Northern Territory Police and the NT Fire and Rescue Service are investigating a structure fire in the Yirrkala Community overnight.

An occupant of a neighbouring house heard smoke alarms and called emergency services.

Firefighters attended and extinguished the flames. The house was unoccupied at the time and there were no injuries.

The Katherine Criminal Investigation Branch is currently investigating the origins of the fire and would like to reassure the Yirrkala Community that this appears to be an isolated incident.

Constable First Class David Hughes said, "It was lucky that the house was unoccupied at the time. An incident like this demonstrates the importance of working smoke alarms, which alerted the neighbour to the fire."

Anyone who may have witnessed the fire or has any information are urged to contact Northern Territory Police on 131444 or alternatively anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
