Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey underway

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

The annual Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey (the Survey) is now underway across all eligible Tasmanian Government schools.

Now in its fifth year, this milestone marks another significant step in our ongoing commitment to understanding and supporting the wellbeing of Tasmanian students.

Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch, said the Survey is undertaken by students in Years 4 to 12, with more than 28,500 completing the Survey in 2022.

The survey is being conducted this year from 28 August to 22 September, with more than 22,000 students participating so far.

"We recognise the link between wellbeing and learning outcomes; when students feel valued, safe and supported they will be in their best position to learn," Minister Jaensch said.

"The Survey plays a critical role in enhancing our understanding of the wellbeing of children and young people.

"It empowers our students with a platform for their voices to be heard and strengthens their sense of agency."

The Survey captures wellbeing data in the student voice across six child and youth wellbeing domains - being loved, safe and valued; having material basics; being healthy; learning; participating; and having a positive sense of culture and identity.

Minister Jaensch said the survey results provide vital information for schools to plan and implement programs and supports that directly address the needs of their students.

"Over the past few years most indicators have remained relatively stable at the state-wide level," the Minister said.

"Our sustained efforts to support student wellbeing are reflected in the results, with 94 per cent of students in 2022 reporting positive relationships and support from their teachers.

"The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to actively listening to the voices of children and young people, seeking a greater understanding of their wellbeing, engagement, and experiences.

"By doing so, we are tailoring our support and resources to their learning journey, in our efforts to ensure that all Tasmanian children are known, safe, well and learning."
