The Rockhampton Region is no stranger to disasters, from floods, bushfires and cyclones, our community has been through its fair share. However, the response and recovery from disasters and emergencies would not have been possible without the support of the local State Emergency Service (SES) crews.
Thanks to the Queensland Government, Rockhampton Regional Council can further support the local SES in the event of a disaster with nearly $37,000 in funding from the 2023-24 State SES Support Grant Program.
The funding will be used to purchase a Storm Response Vehicle for Gracemere and a generator cover.
Member for Rockhampton Barry O'Rourke said it is great to hear that our local SES volunteers in Gracemere, have received this grant to allow them to do what they do best and continue to respond to the needs of our community quickly and effectively.
"Our local SES volunteers have a proud history of helping, protecting and educating communities," Mr O'Rourke said.
"SES volunteers are highly trained to respond to a range of incidents including cyclones, storms, floods, forensic searches, and cliff rescues.
"It is vital that we continue to provide them with the best equipment and facilities, to do that vital work in keeping Queenslanders safe and helping them recover from natural disasters."
Member for Keppel and Assistant Minister for Health and Regional Health Infrastructure Brittany Lauga has urged the community to celebrate and thank State Emergency Service volunteers for the outstanding work they do.
"Anyone who has been helped by the State Emergency Service volunteers should remember how hard these volunteers work and how disciplined they are rescuing people and, on occasions, risking their own life,'' Ms Lauga said.
"The Government was committed to ensuring those who are dedicated to keeping our communities safe have the best possible resources.
"Substantial funding has been allocated to personal protective and operational equipment for SES Groups across the state, including swiftwater rescue equipment and delivery of additional equipment onto flood boats.
"Whether it be floods or bushfires, both of which have affected this region, the SES is there to help."
Rockhampton Region Mayor and Chair of the LDMG, Tony Williams said this grant is a fantastic outcome for the region and further equips our local SES crews to respond to disasters and emergencies throughout Central Queensland.
"I want to thank the Queensland Government for their contribution to our local SES, it's tangible resources like these that help the crews safeguard our community," Mayor Williams said.
"Council works closely with the local SES to protect communities and this funding exemplifies the great partnership between State Government, Local government and SES.
"Through Council's successful grant application, we are proud to assist in keeping our communities safe before, during and after disasters or emergencies."
Local SES Controller Eddie Cowie said the grant has funded the very items needed to enhance SES capability and response.
"My appreciation extends to the Queensland Government for their assistance to help keep our region safe," Mr Cowie said.
"The Storm response Vehicle will become an essential part of our fleet and the generator cover will keep our generator protected, ensuring we have power supply during critical moments.
"It's our job to ensure we are prepared, to minimise any potential disruption and assist in the aftermath of a disaster, and these new resources enable us to do just that."
