Access to fertility treatment will be more affordable under a re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government, with a new subsidy to help more women fulfil their dream of having children.
We will assist around 2,500 Tasmanian women with out-of-pocket costs associated with In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), other assisted reproductive technology treatments, or fertility preservation services.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the high cost of fertility treatment can be a real barrier for many women wanting to start or grow their families.
"We know a growing number of women are accessing fertility treatments, and while costs vary, an IVF cycle could leave women in Tasmania around $3,000 out of pocket," the Premier said.
"We'll provide a subsidy up to $2,000 to support women on their journey to motherhood and to ensure more equitable access.
"Women's health is an absolute priority of our Government, and we're getting on with the job.
"Over the past week, we've already announced four new BreastScreen clinics across the State, as well as funding for women's health service The Bubble, and we will continue to boost women's healthcare right across Tasmania."
While Medicare, the Extended Medicare Safety Net, and private health insurance do meet some costs for IVF and other assisted reproductive technology treatments, the costs remain prohibitive for many women.
In addition, a re-elected Liberal Government will lobby the Federal Labor Government to subsidise Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing. This simple blood test, which screens for certain conditions in a developing baby, currently costs women around $500, with no Medicare rebates.
The Liberal team is offering: a clear plan, a united team, and the leadership to get on with it.
A majority Liberal Government is the only way to keep Tasmania moving forward with certainty, stability, and efficiency.
Let's get on with it and finish the job, for Tasmania.
