Surfer dies after pulled from ocean at Byron Bay

A surfer has died after being pulled from the water at Byron Bay this afternoon.

About 2.10pm (Thursday 26 August 2021), emergency services were called to Wategos Beach, Byron Bay, following reports an unconscious man had been pulled from the ocean by three surfers.

An off-duty paramedic, together with local police, commenced CPR on the man before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

Despite their efforts, he died at the scene.

He has since been formally identified as a 57-year-old Byron Bay man.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District attended and will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
