Surry Hills detectives appeal for information over arson and attempted murder

Police are appealing for information as investigations continue into an attempted murder and arson at a Surry Hills restaurant earlier this month.

Emergency services responded to reports of building fire on Crown Street, Surry Hills, about 11am on Thursday 4 July 2019.

Passers-by rescued the 37-year-old male resident from the first floor of the building, but were unable to retrieve his dog, who was later found dead inside the building.

The man was treated for stab wounds to his back and fire-related injuries. He has since been released from hospital.

After the fire was extinguished, a crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives from Surry Hills Police Area Command established Strike Force Stockade to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Their inquiries have revealed the fire was deliberately lit and multiple ignition points have been identified throughout the building.

Investigators have spoken with numerous witnesses and reviewed hours of CCTV and are now appealing for public assistance to identify a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

The man depicted is described as only as being 175cm-180cm tall and with a medium build. At the time he was wearing dark clothing.

Anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Stockade detectives is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
