Suspicious fire causes extensive damage to unit block in Hamilton

Police are investigating following a suspicious fire in Newcastle yesterday, NSW Police say.

Shortly after 7.30pm today, emergency services were called to Fowler Street, Hamilton following reports a unit block was well alight.

Several units were evacuated before NSW Fire & Rescue extinguished the blaze.

No one was injured during the fire; however the unit block received extensive damage.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Local Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.

Just after 9pm, a 41-year-old man was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station, before being transferred to John Hunter Hospital for treatment of unrelated injuries.

The man has since been released and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
