Wollongong City Council is moving forward with plans for an innovative, sustainable new Helensburgh Community Centre and Library, with local firm Sherson Architecture appointed as principal design consultant bringing expertise in environmentally responsible design and construction.
Community feedback has shaped the vision for a vibrant, flexible facility overlooking local bushland. Across five formal engagements between 2017 and 2024, as well as meetings and input from local community groups, residents called for energy-efficient design, eco-friendly materials, and spaces for cultural, educational and recreational activities, alongside improved accessibility and transport links.
With offices in Austinmer and Wanake, New Zealand, successful tenderer, Sherson Architecture, brings extensive experience in public, health and tourism architecture, and a track record in sustainable design and modern methods of construction that minimise both environmental impact, and impact to locals during construction.
Council has also partnered with NSW Public Works, the State's accredited infrastructure delivery agency, to help ensure this environmentally innovative project is delivered on time and on budget.
Council will be presenting designs to the community in early 2026. Construction is scheduled to be completed by late 2028.
"A cornerstone project for Helensburgh, the vision is for a vibrant hub that blends technology, creativity, and green innovation that complements the area's unique bushland character," said Lord Mayor of Wollongong, Cr Tania Brown.
"We appreciate that this has been a long time coming for residents of Helensburgh. With input from over 750 people, including young people living in the area, we're confident this facility will reflect local values and future aspirations."

Council closed the original Helensburgh Community Centre at 26A Walker Street in late 2021 due to significant damage caused by subfloor water ingress and mould. Following repairs this year, rooms adjacent to Walker Street were reopened as Helensburgh Community Rooms to provide temporary meeting space while plans progress for the new combined facility.
Once opened, the new centre will replace both the old facility and the temporary rooms. No decision has been made on the future use of the current Community Centre site, as Council only owns a portion of the land.
The land where the current library stands at 57 Walker Street will be sold, with funds raised through the sale contributing to the cost of the new community centre and library.
