Swan Active team celebrates award win

Swan Active team wins award

Our Maali Borduck-Yen (Swan Active) team are celebrating this month after winning an award for their striking Indigenous uniforms which feature the artwork of local Noongar artists.

The Community Based Initiative of the Year Award was presented to the team on Thursday, June 8 as part of the Park & Leisure Australia (WA) 2023 Regional Awards of Excellence.

This annual ceremony recognises and celebrates the outstanding initiatives and innovative efforts of 'the people behind the places' which promote good use of leisure time for a number of social, environmental and economic benefits to the community.

The uniform designs were created by local artist and Noongar woman Jeanette Garlett in collaboration with staff members Effie Garlett-Watson and Kruz Garlett.

They are worn by staff to honour the rich history and culture of our local Indigenous community, support cultural learning and start conversations about the culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The City of Swan is proud of our diverse community and has an ongoing commitment to building a just, equitable and reconciled Australia, as outlined in our Reconciliation Action Plan (Innovative RAP) 2022-2024.
