Tonight, as part of the Parkes Action Club's Christmas Parade and Carnival, the new CBD lights in Parkes will be switched on. The project, partially funded by the NSW Government's Community Improvement District Pilot Program (Round Two), aims to energise the town centre and support the long-term growth of the local economy.
Cr Bill Jayet has been a long-time advocate of bringing beautiful lights into our Shire for Christmas. "In recent years Council has gradually added to the Christmas displays throughout our Shire, much to the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike, " Cr Jayet said.
"This year is going to be more spectacular than ever throughout the Parkes CBD and Cooke Park thanks to the grant funding made available by the NSW Government. Congratulations to Tim Gillogly and the team in getting all in order for tonight's official turning on of the lights.
"It is fantastic for Council to be able to add to the joy of Christmas - Cooke Park in particular will certainly be the highlight place to be at dusk this evening when all will be revealed," Cr Jayet said.
Eight large trees in Cooke Park will now shine with icicle lights and LED up lights, while 15 trees along Clarinda Street in the CBD have been wrapped in fairy lights.
Key highlights of the total project include:
- Establish a collaborative governance model that brings together local businesses, property owners, and Council to shape the future of the CBD.
- Develop an updated Vibrancy Strategy for the CBD and branding strategy to position Parkes as a must-visit regional hub (currently underway)
- Deliver tailored business training and workshops to strengthen local skills and competitiveness (held in October).
- Transform Cooke Park with a limited-time lighting installation and a signature community activation event, creating a unique focal point for connection, celebration, and local engagement (2026)
With the Newell Highway bypass now operational, the project is focused on enhancing the Parkes CBD's attractiveness, accessibility, and long-term economic resilience. The revitalisation is about making the CBD more walkable, engaging, and connected.
The Parkes CBD Revitalisation Project is proudly funded through the NSW Government's Community Improvement District Pilot Program led by Transport for NSW and represents a dedicated collaboration between community, business, and government in delivering a shared vision for the future.
