A Western Sydney man appeared before Campbelltown Local Court yesterday (18 February 2025) charged with threatening to kill a federal parliamentarian.
The man, 55, was charged today after an AFP National Security Investigations (NSI) team executed a search warrant at his Macquarie Fields residence. He appeared before Campbelltown Local Court and was refused bail. The man is scheduled to reappear before the same court on 4 March, 2026.
During the search warrant investigators located and seized three gel blasters, three slingshot mounts and a pair of metal handcuffs.
Investigators also seized electronic devices which will be subject to further forensic examination.
It will be alleged the 55-year-old was responsible for a number of threatening calls to the federal parliamentarian's office in February, 2026.
The man was charged with:
- Two counts of using a carriage service to make a threat to kill, contrary to section 474.15(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth);
- Three counts of possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm, namely one gel blaster shotgun and two gel blaster hand guns, contrary to section 7(1) of the Firearms Act 1996 (NSW); and
- One count of possessing a prohibited weapon, namely metal handcuffs, without permit -T2, Section 7(1), Weapons Prohibition Act 1998 (NSW).
These offences carry maximum penalties of 10 years' imprisonment.
AFP Detective Superintendent Jeremy Staunton said the AFP takes all reports of harassment towards politicians seriously.
"The AFP supports freedom of speech and political expression, but criminal behaviour and threats to kill will never be tolerated," Det Supt Staunton added.
"Hiding behind a keyboard or phone does not mean you are anonymous and out of the AFP's reach - we have the resources and technology to find you and bring you before the courts."
The AFP established NSI teams in September, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion, including the targeting of federal parliamentarians.
