A Brunswick man who almost lost his father to stroke is set to embark on a Run Melbourne challenge with a difference.
Cameron Lomini will push his dad Domenico, in a wheelchair, for five kilometres when the event takes place today (Sunday, July 28).
Cameron said while this may sound physically daunting to many, he was looking forward to the opportunity.
"There was a time when I didn't think Dad would survive, so I am thrilled we are able to tackle this together," Cameron said.
"Dad's stroke in 2018 changed his life in an instant. Dad went from being completely independent to having mum as his full time nurse.
"I am so proud of them both. Dad's been working so hard to get back on his feet, while Mum has been a source of strength and a constant cheerleader as his carer. They are an unbelievable team."
Cameron and Domenico have roped in more than 20 friends and family members to join them on the Run Melbourne journey, and they will all be raising funds for the Stroke Foundation. Funds raised will help Stroke Foundation to continue to deliver vital programs for stroke survivors.
"I signed up to this event to show my support, not only for Dad, but others who are recovering from this debilitating brain disease," Cameron said.
There will be more than 14,000 strokes in Victoria alone this year and almost 120,000 stroke survivors are living in the community.
Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan, who will also be taking part in Run Melbourne, applauded the family's efforts.
"Cameron and Domenico know too well the impact of stroke is widespread and recovery is an ongoing challenge, Ms McGowan said.
"They have already raised more than $5,000 for the Stroke Foundation which is an incredible effort and this will help in our mission to prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery.
"Too many lives are being impacted by stroke, but it is treatable and it is beatable."
More than 130 Run Melbourne participants have chosen the Stroke Foundation as their charity of choice this year.
